In a significant move to strengthen its presence in the growing agricultural sector of northern Brazil, The Mosaic Company (NYSE: MOS) officially opened a state-of-the-art fertilizer complex in Palmeirante, Tocantins. The $84 million project, which was commissioned on July 16, 2025, under the leadership of Executive Vice President Jenny Wang, is a pivotal milestone in Mosaic’s expansion strategy in the region.
Strategically located in the rapidly developing MATOPIBA agricultural region, which includes the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia, the new facility is poised to meet the increasing needs of the local farming community. With its advanced operational capabilities and robust logistics infrastructure, the Palmeirante plant is poised to become a cornerstone of Mosaic’s supply chain, ensuring the timely and efficient delivery of customized fertilizer blends to local farmers
The facility has an annual capacity of 1 million metric tons, with an initial projected output of 500,000 tons in 2025. It is equipped with the latest automation technology. Computer-controlled blending systems enable precise nutrient formulation, ensuring each fertilizer batch meets the specific needs of the region’s diverse crops. This level of customization enhances crop yields and promotes sustainable farming practices by optimizing nutrient usage.
The logistics infrastructure at the Palmeirante plant is equally impressive. It features a 50,000-ton bulk storage capacity and a dedicated rail spur that connects directly to the Itaqui port. This strategic connection reduces transport costs by 15%, making Mosaic’s fertilizers more accessible and cost-effective for local farmers. An automated bagging line with a throughput of 2,400 bags per hour ensures rapid and efficient packaging, further streamlining the distribution process.
During the inauguration ceremony, Executive Vice President Jenny Wang emphasized the facility’s strategic importance: “By situating this facility at the crossroads of MATOPIBA’s expanding farmland, we’re eliminating critical bottlenecks in fertilizer distribution. Farmers will have just-in-time access to customized blends and will benefit from our integrated supply chain.”
The new complex highlights Mosaic’s dedication to innovation and sustainability, establishing the company as a leader in developing Brazil’s agricultural sector. As the MATOPIBA region continues to grow, the Palmeirante facility is poised to meet the rising demand for premium fertilizers, thereby boosting agricultural productivity and regional economic growth.
Mosaic’s investment in northern Brazil demonstrates its forward-looking approach to meeting the challenges and opportunities of the global agricultural market. With this state-of-the-art facility, Mosaic enhances its operational efficiency and contributes significantly to the sustainable development of one of Brazil’s most important agricultural regions.
As Brazil’s agricultural landscape continues to evolve, the Palmeirante facility stands as a testament to Mosaic’s dedication to innovation, sustainability, and growth. It paves the way for a more prosperous and productive future for farmers in the MATOPIBA region and beyond.
