India’s Urea Sales Expected to Hit Record High in December

The international energy and commodities price assessment agency, on December 18, India’s urea sales this month are projected to reach nearly 6 million tonnes, potentially setting a new monthly sales record.

As a traditional peak consumption month within the Rabi season (October to March), December started with strong sales momentum. Latest provisional data indicates that India’s domestic urea production has remained relatively stable, averaging around 2.6 million tonnes per month.

In December 2023, India’s urea sales stood at 5.2 million tonnes. The previous all-time monthly sales record was 5.4 million tonnes, achieved in July of this year.

Data shows that India’s urea inventory was approximately 6.3 million tonnes in mid-December, down from 7.1 million tonnes at the beginning of the month. This month’s robust sales figures are likely a key driver behind the early tender announcement by importer and supplier National Fertilizers Limited (NFL) on December 16. The tender, which closes on January 2, 2026, seeks to procure 1.5 million tonnes of urea for delivery by February 20, 2026.

As the world’s largest urea importer, India’s regular tenders are closely watched by the global urea market. Reports indicate that India has procured 9.23 million tonnes of urea through tenders so far this year.
